Police have released body camera footage showing the moment a woman lights up a crack pipe after being pulled over by officers following a pursuit. The footage was made public by Michigan's Macomb County Sheriff's Office in order to highlight the scale of the drug problem in the area, describing the video as proof that 'the epidemic is real.'
The clip shows the suspect, 36-year-old Kristi Rettig, nonchalantly taking a hit behind the wheel while officers point their firearms at her and demand she puts her hands up.

Officers originally tried to pull Rettig over for a routine traffic stop at around 2 a.m. in Harrison Township on October 25, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
The driver disobeyed all orders to stop and continued to attempt to flee from the officers. During the pursuit, stop sticks were deployed, causing damage to the suspect's vehicle. As the officers then attempted to box in the vehicle, Rettig crashed into them and continued to drive away before eventually coming to stop.
'The driver and passenger were instructed by several deputies, with drawn pistols, to show their hands. The passenger complied, however, the driver had other priorities,' the department said in a statement. 'As you can clearly see in this deputy's body camera, the driver ignores deputies' commands and begins smoking crack cocaine.'
Both Rettig and her female passenger were removed from the car and taken into custody. Neither the suspects or the officers were injured during the incident.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office hope the footage will help raise awareness of substance abuse.
'This problem is everywhere and affects more than those who use. It affects family, friends, and even those just traveling down the road. If you or someone you know needs help to regain a clean and sober life, please take that first step,' the department said.
Rettig was later charged with flee and elude, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and operating while license suspended.
The passenger, Alexandra Weed, 28, was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
